Easy BBQ Chicken Wing Recipe

Our Brown Sugar Grilled BBQ Chicken Wings are easy to make at home. With our recipes, you can skip the oil and fryer and throw amazing wings in our delicious homemade barbecue sauce. These grill wings are sweet, smoky and a little sticky!

We love chicken wings, but the last thing we have to do at home is to use a fryer. That’s why we are a big fan of roasting chicken wings at home. For this barbecue chicken wing recipe, we use the same method as crispy roasted hot wings, but instead of throwing the roasted wings with buffalo sauce, we use a simple homemade barbecue sauce.

This recipe guarantees crunchy and delicious wings! They are also great for serving the crowd. This simple recipe allows you to make large batches of wings in very few work. For recipes like this, check out our spicy chicken wings or these sweet chili chicken wings.

Key Ingredients

  • Chicken Wings: We use chicken wings that have split into chicken legs and wings. Most stores sell them this way, but you can separate yourself if you want. You can also keep them whole (I do this in my roasted wing recipe). This recipe works either way. If you need guidance on splitting your wings, check out our tutorial on how to cut chicken wings.
  • Homemade BBQ Sauce: For BBQ sauce, we use a sauce similar to one used to roast ribs in the oven. You need to tomato sauce, brown sugar, apple cider vinegar, Sriracha, soy sauce and cumin. Quick and easy. I also love this sweet and rich BBQ sauce, which works well with these wings as well.

How to make barbecue chicken wings

It’s too easy to make barbecue wings at home. Below, we share how we make them, how long it takes to bake the wings, make them crispy, and can grill the sauce quickly and easily. There are 3 things to remember to make the best wings:

  1. Rather than frying, bake the chicken wings on a wire rack inside a framed baking tray and throw it into some homemade barbecue sauce. By cooking chicken wings on wire racks, the fat drips when baking, making them crispier.
  2. Bake the chicken wings at high oven temperature (we like 400ºF) for 35 to 45 minutes. (You can bake your wings at higher temperatures, but depending on the oven, you may find that the oven will smoke slightly.)
  3. Throw the roasted wings away with more barbecue sauce. Then, serve with your favorite dip. We love homemade ranch or blue cheese dressings.

The sauce of these grilled BBQ chicken wings gathers together in 5 minutes, sweet, smoky and a little spicy, which is awesome. If you have a store-bought BBQ sauce you like, feel free to use it. Stitching the wings on the baking sheet on the rack helps make it more crispy, so use it if you have one!

Service 6

You will need

3 lbs (1.3 kg) chicken wings, separated in joints, pointed

1 cup (250g) tomato sauce, try homemade tomato sauce

1/2 cup (100g) lightly filled with brown sugar

1 tablespoon apple cider vinegar

1 tablespoon sriracha chili sauce

1 teaspoon light soy sauce

1/2 teaspoon ground cumin

direction

1Heat the oven 400°F (204°C). Set the wire rack in a large baking tray. Spray rack with non-stick cooking spray.

2Make barbecue sauce: Stir ketchup, brown sugar, vinegar, sriracha, cumin and soy sauce in a medium hot pot over medium heat. Cook for 2 to 3 minutes, or until the sugar dissolves. Taste and adjust with other soy sauce or sugar.

3Divide the sauce in half, providing half for the wings.

4Throw the chicken wings with the remaining half of the BBQ sauce and place on the prepared baking sheet.

5Bake the chicken wings, turning once during cooking, until the internal thermometer records 165°F, 35 to 45 minutes.

6Serve the roasted wings with the sauce you previously set aside, either on the side or throw with chicken.

Adam and Joanne’s Tips

  • No wire rack: If you don’t have a wire rack that fits the inside of a baking tray, you can still make wings. Place them on a baking sheet without racking and rotate them a few times during the baking process.
  • BBQ sauce: You will need 1¼ cup of barbecue sauce, homemade or store-buyed.
  • We have used the USDA database to calculate the approximation. Depending on the size, a 1 pound wing will be between 8 and 12 wings.
